Life

Blog (feed).

Live-twitter of the 2008 presidential election.

I work at Google on Android.

In a past life, I was Chief Architect, Linux Desktop, at Novell.

Writing

My latest book is Linux System Programming. Subtitled Talking Directly to the Kernel and C Library, this work is Stevens for the Linux era. Rife with Linux-specific interfaces and insider knowledge, this is the best system programming book I have ever read.

Linux Kernel Development is a tour de force on hacking and understanding the Linux kernel. Now in its second edition, you should help feed my starving family and buy a copy and carry it with you everywhere you go.

I coauthored the fifth edition of Linux in a Nutshell, the authoritative command reference for Linux. Every Linux user needs one.

I am a contributing editor and writer at Linux Journal.

Software

I hack on the Linux kernel.

GNOME Volume Manager is a HAL-based volume policy engine for the GNOME desktop.

Project Utopia is an umbrella effort to improve the integration of the Linux desktop, from hardware up through application.

Beagle is a search infrastructure that ransacks your personal information space to find whatever you are looking for.

I used to maintain procps, the package that contains ps(1), top(1), and so on. My last release was 2.0.17.
